  • Playwright
  • Full productions of my plays have been presented in New York by a range of theatres including SoHo Rep, The Ontological-Hysteric Theater, The Adobe Theatre Company, The Ground Floor Theatre Lab, The First Annual New York International Fringe Festival (where my play Lucky Man won Best Ensemble Production) and in Chicago by The Strawdog Theatre Company. Additional workshops and readings at The Juilliard School, The Flea Theatre/Bat Theatre Company, Roadworks Productions (Chicago) and The Horla Theatre Company (London). I spent five years (1993-1998) as a Resident Artist at The Ontological-Hysteric Theater [Richard Foreman, Artistic Director], where my writing and directing work was featured in four mainstage productions, six festival productions (including the Obie Award winning Blueprint Series), and two staged readings. I also spent two years (1995-1997) as a resident playwright with the award-winning Ground Floor Theatre Lab. I've been honored with a fellowship to The Millay Colony For The Arts, and as a finalist in the 1998 National Ten Minute Play Contest at Actors Theatre of Louisville. For more comprehensive credits, a complete production history is available on this site.

  • Directing / Producing
  • While at The Ontological Theater, I created and produced the first two seasons (1996-1998) of their acclaimed Downstairs Series for New Works, presenting pieces by over 50 theater artists including Richard Maxwell, Judy Elkan, Anne Washburn, The Collapsable Giraffe, Hangdog Theater, and RadioHole. I've founded two theater companies - The Independent Theatre Company (1987-1991) and The Nevermore Theatre Project (1992-1994) - where I produced and directed over a dozen plays, mainly classic and absurdist texts. I served as producer and administrator for the 2001-2002 Pataphysics Playwriting Workshops at The Flea Theater/Bat Theatre Company with master playwrights Mac Wellman, Maria Irene Fornes, Eric Ehn, Jose Rivera, Jeff Jones and Karen Finley. I am also the director-on-call for the ongoing performance extravaganza which is Laurena's Pancake Party. A complete list of directing credits is available.

  • Personal
  • I'm a native New Yorker. My early years were split between private school in the city and a home-made log cabin in the backwoods of Maine where my mom, my sister and I ran a working farm every summer. I'm lucky enough to have a really good primary education plus know the best way to skin a pig (all of which served me well when I set out for a life in downtown theater). I started working as a stage manager at the tender age of seventeen, got into directing a few years later, producing a few years after that, and wrote my first play on a dare in 1993.
