Course Requirements |
| Students must be in reasonable physical condition and capable of going off-trail in rugged terrain. In addition to the 10-essentials, heavy-duty hiking or mountaineering boots, raingear and synthetic clothing are required. Students will need "Wilderness Navigation" by Burns & Burns (available in the Mountaineers bookstore), USGS Mt Baring and USGS Index topographic maps. A quality compass with adjustable declination is required but will not be needed until the first workshop - see the compass page for details. If you do not have a compass DO NOT purchase one until you understand the requirements — if you are taking Climbing, Snowshoe, Backcountry Ski or Alpine scrampling, wait until after the first lecture in your course, in which compass requirements will be described in detail. If you get the wrong compass, you will just have to get another or exchange it. if you are taking Climbing, Snowshoe, Backcountry Ski or Alpine scrampling, wait until after the first lecture in your course, in which compass requirements will be described in detail.
